First day in Addis!

After two days of travel we are finally here! My first impression flying into Ethiopia was surprise at how green everything is.  They are in their rainy season now which should end at the end of September.  It was raining when we arrived and later in the day we had a thunder/rain/hail storm.

After a lengthy wait in line to get through immigration we were able to collect our luggage and head through customs.  We were so happy to see two familiar faces on the other side of the customs doors waving us a welcome. Andy and Jao were there to greet us as well as Belay (Gelila's uncle who's house we are renting).  Also the two young girls who are here from the states teaching came by the airport for a quick hello.

Andy accompanied our luggage back to the house by taxi while the rest of us piled into Belay's car for the trek home.

Cameron soon headed off to bed for a nap which lasted the rest of the day!

We headed out a little after noon with the workers for a bite of lunch at a restaurant a couple minutes walk from the house.  Warren had a burger which was a homemade patty and HUGE.  The rest of us had a very tasty beef stirfry.  Tomorrow I will have to make a menu plan (aka figure out which part of the cow to point at so they can cut me some meat) and explore the local markets for vegetables etc.

Later that evening Wolansa the wife of Belay came by and took us out for a bit of shopping at "ALLMART" which sounds vaguely like something I am familiar with but the name is as close as it gets :) We purchased some essentials as we don't get our pallet until hopefully later today.

We are very grateful for the home,  it is in a nicer area, and has many beautiful plants outside.  The water levels in the storage tanks held up though we may have to do something about the lack of pressure.

I'm sure there is much more to share than just that though, so hopefully we can Skype soon =) Jayme wasn't too impressed by the pic of your little friend because he said that means his cousins would be close by!! aka SNAKES!! Hope you're enjoying getting to know your new surroundings. Love you!

  2. Glad you made it safe! Saw a program today on Erta Ale. One of the most active volcanoes in the world in the north east of Ethiopia. It looks quite beautiful. Maybe you will get to go and take some pictures :)
